Memento mori

New exhibition at the Sedlec Ossuary

A new exhibition, Memento Mori, is being created underground, in the immediate vicinity of the Sedlec Ossuary. It is here that, during the restoration of the monument, the archeologists uncovered nearly 1,850 medieval burials, including mass graves dating back to times of famine and plague. From a place where generations of people rested for centuries, one of the most extraordinary exhibition spaces of its kind is now taking shape.

Remember death,
don’t forget to live

What began as a technical excavation has evolved into an architecturally unique space that intertwines medieval spirituality, authentic human stories, contemporary art, and the profound idea of memento mori — remember death. Not as a symbol of fear, but as a reminder of the value of life, time, and human relationships.

A timeless message spanning the centuries

A site that quite literally emerged from history now connects the past with the present, reviving a message that for centuries formed a natural part of human existence, yet has been nearly forgotten amid today’s world of constant haste and the illusion of our own immortality.
